Naamkaran is a traditional Hindu naming ceremony. In Sanskrit ‘naam’ means ‘name’ and ‘karan’ means ‘to effect’. It is performed to formally choose the newborn’s name.
OCCASION:
The most joyous moment in all the families is the birth of a child. The whole family gets into several preparations to welcome the new member of the family. There are many ceremonies carried out during this period, out of which ‘Naamkaran’ or Naamakarana Samskara’ is an inevitable and integral part of the ceremony. A person’s identity is his or her name. So while choosing a name, several parameters are kept in mind.
CEREMONY DESCRIPTION:
This ceremony is generally held at home or in the temple. But it depends on the family and community. Some may prefer a small private ceremony
with family, While for some naamkaran is a lavish affair, celebrated in a special pandal or banquet hall with many guests. ‘Naam’ is a Sanskrit word referred as ‘Name’ and ‘Karan’ means ‘To Imply’. All the relatives and close ones are invited for this ceremony. The baby is given a bath and made to wear new clothes. Priest is called upon to perform puja or havan and prayers are offered for baby’s health, happiness and long life. The pandit will also draw out the baby’s horoscope and pray for the child. After the name is whispered into baby’s ear, it is announced to the family members and guests. After the naming ceremony relatives present few drops of sweet content on baby’s lips and if the baby smacks the lips it is considered a good sign. The baby is then welcomed into the family and community with his given name. After the ceremony, prasad is offered, and everyone blesses the baby and offers gifts. The eleventh or twelfth day is considered as most auspicious timing for this ceremony. People even go for the religious leader’s advice and fix a muhurtham. This ceremony can be held in any day after the tenth day and before the baby’s 1st birthday.
PURPOSE & BENEFITS:
Naming a baby is not only a religious ceremony but also associated socially. This ceremony marks the 1st step when an individual is introduced in the society by its name! The baby’s name is chosen after considering its various birth-astrological placements and generally two different names are given. In the case as a boy there is a ‘Sharma’ and another name while in the case of a girl it can be limited to just one name. Generally for the selection of name a particular letter from Sanskrit is taken which is related with the child’s solar birth sign and which can prove lucky for the baby. It is very important that the name chosen should have all the matches with the Raasi. Raasis are determined by the planetary positions at the date and exact time of the child’s birth. The name chosen determines the future of the baby. A child’s life will be filled with positive moments if the name is all well set according to the horoscope!
